Design awards are by no means a given – even though the products by sink and mixer tap specialist Blanco have brought in large numbers of them in recent years. The most recent one is something that Blanco is particularly proud of: the Blanco Saga mixer tap has received the German Design Award 2014. The ceremonial presentation of the internationally renowned premium award took place during the Ambiente, the annual consumer goods fair, in Frankfurt am Main.
“We are simply delighted to receive this high-calibre award – not least because nomination for participation in the German Design Award requires the receipt of awards from other renowned competitions,” emphasised Udo Heckelsberger, Marketing Director at Blanco, who was in Frankfurt to receive the award on the company’s behalf. And for Head Designer Brigitte Ziemann, the German Design Award is also the “star prize”, currently the highest award in the category of sinks and mixer taps. “The design quality of the products submitted for the German Design Award is known to be extremely high. With that in mind, the tremendous result in this competition is a very special confirmation of our design strategy, both with regard to its form and its consistency.”
Saga has turned out to be a huge hit for Blanco: it has already won no fewer than five international competitions. The mixer tap with the unusual operating concept and aesthetic technical design that is pared down to the minimum appealed to the top flight panel of experts. Blanco Saga was named the “Winner” in the category of Home Interior. Around 1900 nominations were to be judged in ten categories. The experts based their decisions on various criteria such as ergonomics, functionality and operation, barrier-free use, design quality, durability and brand value. The level of innovation, product aesthetics, and technical and ecological aspects were also equally important.
About the German Design Award
The German Design Award is tendered annually by the Rat für Formgebung, the German Design Council. The foundation was established by the BDI in 1953 following a resolution by the German Bundestag in order to strengthen the competitiveness of German industry and the quality of German products. According to the Council, the purpose of the renowned German Design Award is to "discover, present and reward unique design trends”. A product has to be nominated in order to enter this renowned competition.
Since last year, the design-savvy public has also been able to be involved. Online voting for the “Public’s Choice Award 2014” of the German Design Award 2014 is open from 7 February until 14 March 2014.
