Dinner by Design brings together internationally celebrated designers and local talent to create three-dimensional dining installations that awe, inspire and delight. The event raises funds for the local design communities. The extraordinary dining environments — from the lavish and romantic to the outrageous and whimsical — set the inspiration stage and celebrate the Canadian interior design.
Alykhan Velji Designs were honoured to participate in the inaugural Dinner By Design event held in Calgary in June 2015. This event gives selected designers a chance to design a 12’x12’ dining space and host a private dining experience by the lead designer of the table installation. Proceeds of the ticket sales to this event and the opening night cocktail party went towards The Alberta College of Art and Design and Contemporary Calgary.
We were thrilled to have Blanco Canada sponsor our design that was themed “Verdant Vivarium”. The essence of the project was an opulent, organic and lavish one of a kind dining experience inspired by the lush environment of a terrarium. Just as a terrarium stimulates the plant living within them, this space was designed to stimulate the senses of those dining in it. We had a lot of help to pull this space together from our contractors, Ryan Murphy Construction to our suppliers: MTHARU and Lightform.
Pulling in organic trends that you see in current interior design was one of our concepts for this project. Organic materials and forms help create a visual experience as well as one for all the senses. One of our inspirations was the Blanco SILGRANIT® Dual Finish faucets (example – Blanco AltaTM or Blanco RitaTM). They have a gorgeous organic feel to it and the dual finish with the Anthracite colour is pure perfection. The colour scheme, the lush terrarium-like environment and the overall organic feel are shown in our dinner installation. We also love the mix of materials with Blanco SILGRANIT® sinks that are made of the natural granite composite material and the selection of accessories that are offered with Blanco sinks such as the Beech, Walnut or Maple Cutting Boards. The mix of organic wood with the SILGRANIT® material is a perfect juxtaposition and the inspiration source.
Space was a huge success and was very well received by all that attended Dinner By Design event in Calgary. What an amazing experience and a huge thank you to Blanco for being our sponsor, and for helping us create this magnificent space.
